Artist: Berit Mogensen Lopez
“Ten years ago, where I am now was where I dreamed of being,” says designer and artist Berit Mogensen Lopez in Copenhagen. She holds a degree in fashion and textile design from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Today she creates art independently and also collaborates with interior designers and architects on specific projects.
Berit’s work is widely known for its dynamic shapes, colors, and textures. Her exploratory approach to the materials and techniques she uses ensures genuine diversity in her work.
“I don’t keep a little notebook of ideas. I prefer to sketch on a larger scale so I can feel the proportions and movement of a composition,” Berit says. She continues: “If I discover something interesting in the process, I’ll follow that idea and start making a series of works to explore its experimental possibilities.”
In this respect, the creative process reminds Berit of jazz: both are full of playfulness, and their dynamics sometimes develop in unexpected directions.
“Ultramarine and Earth Tones”
For Berit, her travels continue to be an enormous source of inspiration, especially the bustling city life she experienced while traveling through Chile, Morocco, Spain, and Italy. These places have cultures rich in color: “Color inspires me. I have a special connection with ultramarine, as well as ochre, burnt ochre, and other subtle dark tones,” she says.
These tones therefore often appear in her work. Yet she remains curious, allowing her to keep changing and growing as an artist. “In my early days, I used a lot of contrasting colors. Now I focus more on soft tones and a lighter expression in my color combinations, reflecting a need for brighter times.”
